Gift of Gab, best known as the technically adept MC of the vaunted Blackalicious, knew that after waiting over five years for a follow-up solo release that he would have to really take this one far. Like other planet kind of far. New album “Escape 2 Mars” signifies the next groundbreaking voyage in the career of an MC who is nothing short of iconic. Cornerstone Recording Arts Society is set to release Escape 2 Mars November 10, 2009 on CD, Vinyl and worldwide digital download.

Production on Escape was placed mainly in the hands of the Bay Area’s talented DNAEBEATS, with a few tracks also helmed by Hednodic, from Gab’s most recent star collabo project The Mighty Underdogs and Crown City Rockers. Del the Funky Homosapien and Brother Ali, another two undeniably iconic MCs, are featured on “Dreamin’”, one of the record’s stand out cuts. Gab also recruited some of the talent from the Quannum Collective he helped pioneer, including Joyo Velarde, Lateef The Truthspeaker, and Honeycut’s vocalist Bart Davenport.

New Era pretty much have the market cornered when it comes to caps. They basically run things. As such, they’ve had literal boatloads of high & mighty guest designers, including Spike Lee, Danny Way, Travis Barker, Gym Class Heroes, Fat Joe, Dizzy Rascal, and Jake Burton. We’d like talented new designers and students to add to their catalogue with their hot headwear designs, so we’re opening this competition to give them the chance.

The winning design will become the next Footasylum exclusive and sold at Footasylum stores throughout the UK. We’re also offering two runners up 12 pieces of their own design.

Mudmowth – Circus in the Cemetry (Review)

You have to chuckle – Associated Minds are hilarious. They’re just edging into the scene, loudly mind you, bringing Welsh Hip Hop to the ears of the still London-centric UK Hip Hop listeners. It’s just pure comedy value, given that the Hip Hop plus Wales thing that most people think of is Goldie Lookin’ Chain’s idiotic banter, that their releases are all so RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME!

Mudmowth‘s latest offering, a shexy white vinyl with dopey-dope-dope artwork, is just so hardcore it’s mental. Mudmowth is a tremendous MC who mixes clarity with humour, seriousness and sickness in perfect measures.

Essentially, this release is a 5 track EP featuring labelmate guests Willo Wispa and Ralph Rip Sh** and production by P.L.O., Devize (from Australia) and Sam Rockwell. The overall feeling is of hard, dark but outright bouncy and jouyously heavy Rap music. Next time I get a chance to see Mud perform live, I know my trainers will get stepped upon, one part of my will be body bleeding and there will be a HUGE grin on my face; this is mosh pit inducing stuff.

‘Skullcrackology’, produced by P.L.O., opens up proceedings and is orientated around live rock drumming, synthy, filthy bass lines and screaming guitars. Mudmowth comes across most vehemently with millions of quotables e.g. ‘The only police record you’ve got is ‘Every Breath I Take”. It’s great to hear such a brilliant Rock infused track that suits the MC’ing down to a T.

‘Return of the Cavemen’ is fresh, Devize offers a jaunty beat that somehow has an Australian sound to it – there’s something about it that sets it’s sound apart from the UK or the US. Willo brings a more chilled out contribution, his style is so lazy and laid back compared to Mudmowth’s – it’s great to hear MC’s who sound different – usually you can’t tell when one has stopped and the next has started! (‘Shouts to Steve Irwin, Down Under – Literally’!!!)

The intro to ‘Circus in the Cemetery’ must have been robbed from some bad 80′s horror movie and it heralds perfectly what’s to come. The title track is menacing both in lyrical content and delivery and the two MC’s have come up with a nice concept with plenty of scope for more classic lines. Not my favourite track on here but nonetheless a banger.

‘Knuckle Down’ is another Devize jobby and the beat is on the lighter side of things whereas the verbals are still gnarly. I like the fact that even though the lyrics are classic battle material the beat is not a doom-and-gloom, dreary sounding backdrop. This track really showcases Mud’s overactive mind; I don’t know how he thinks up this stuff!

‘The Broken Home of Mr. Jones’ is a lovely but sad track and the title says it all. Mudmowth takes on the persona of an alcoholic man whose life is in tatters and he paints the picture real well. As Mudmowth says himself: ‘The sad thing I know is that half of Britain understands me’. This is an insightful examination of the state of many people in our country.

I can’t really say anything I didn’t already say in the intro to this review. This is simply brilliant Hip Hop that reveals new treasures on each listen. For the price of a couple of beers this could be yours and if you buy it right off Associated Minds they’ll no doubt throw in a load of free stuff; don’t be a Mr. Jones – buy this EP!

The ‘Leeds By Example’ project enabled a variety of local hip hop artists to come together and release their music on one album; showcasing the wealth of talent in the city. The album was released in April 2006 to huge acclaim from both the local and national music press whilst receiving airplay on numerous radio stations.

In order to celebrate the fantastic achievements by everyone involved, the first Leeds By Example Live event will get under way this October 11th at the Hi-Fi Club in Leeds. The night will feature live PA’s from Breaking the Illusion, Junkyard Tactics, 9 Lives Clik and Northern Hostility.

Breaking the Illusion is a well respected act on the Leeds Music Scene having played Glastonbury in 2007 and Leeds Festival in 2006 and seamlessly going from strength to strength. BTI has recently recorded live sessions for BBC Radio One, BBC Humberside’s Raw Talent and Channel M and does not appear to be stopping anytime soon.

Junkyard Tactics feature a wealth of talent and experience within their ranks made up of several members of the “Invizible Circle”. Made up of Monkee, Oddball, J. Bravo, Aiwan & DMW their first release “Taking Over” was received with some great reviews.

9 Lives Clik are made up of Eliphino, Chief Wiggum, Haiku & Pro-Optic who have performed together for the past few years supporting some Hip Hop veterans such as Jazzy Jeff, ?uestlove and many many more. Producer Eliphino is an MPC purist and his self funded debut release “Out of Phase” was nominated for best album at the Leeds Independent Music Awards.

Northern Hostility are a collective of DJ’s and MC’s from across the city. Their debut release “Bad Language Mixtape” mixed by renowned Leeds turntablist DJ Sinical will be available soon and will feature tracks from the individual artists and collaborations.

Lethal Bizzle support slot competition

Having announced a headline tour in August to celebrate the release of his single ‘Bizzle Bizzle/’Babylons Burning The Ghetto’ on 16th July and the hotly anticipated album ‘Back To Bizznizz’ released on 23rd July, Lethal Bizzle has announced an exciting tour competition.

Lethal is giving the chance for one lucky act to open for him each night of his UK tour. A competition will run in each town of the tour to find the band/artist which he will handpick to open the show.

Bizzle is the most prolific, exciting rapper to emerge from the UK underground scene in recent years and as a fan of all types of music, has been leading the way for the indie/grime crossover. He is a NME magazine favourite and has performed tracks with The Rakes, Pete Doherty, Test Icicles, Gallows, Babyshambles and The Enemy.

The competition is open to all genre’s whether they be a singer, band or MC. Lethal is looking for fresh and exciting new talent and hopes the range of music to be vast and interesting.

Hailing from Virginia, Clipse — brothers Pusha T and Malice — were one of the rare first artists to associate with the Neptunes. The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams first met the duo in the early ’90s, was very impressed by their talents, and decided to help them get a gig. Hooking them up with the Elektra label, an early single flopped and the group seemed done, even
though an album’s worth of material had been recorded. Williams was not discouraged and continued to hype the group until Arista finally intervened in 2001. Williams and partner Chad Hugo stepped behind the boards and produced Lord Willin’, Clipse’s 2002 full-length debut, released through Star Trak / Arista. On the strength of “Grindin’,” the album hit the Top Ten of the R&B/Hip-Hop and Billboard 200 charts and eventually went gold. The Sony-BMG merger threw the follow-up into limbo and sparked a long bout of legal snags between Clipse and their new parent label, Jive. While the delay was going on, Clipse issued a series of mixtapes and set up their Re-Up label. The label disputes were eventually cleared up, and Hell Hath No Fury was finally released on November 28, 2006.
