The multi-disciplinary MC skills tournament, the Golden Mic Challenge, has been won by a 30Tonne MC for the 2nd year in a row. Matter fought off stiff competition from Tongue-Tied, Sage and Jimmy Crackstar in the final, walking away with the gold plated Shure SM58 and a host of other prizes including a festival slot. 8 competitors had been whittled down over the three heats.
The Golden Mic Challenge tests the emcees over several Golden Challenges including Pre-Written tracks, Freestyle Skills (with words from the Crowd), Rap Battle Skills & Accapella. Points are awarded by the crowd and independent judges who this year included UK Hip Hop artist Asaviour.
Matter is a member of UK Hip Hop outfit Verbal Contact, who is considered to be one of Leeds’ most revered MC’s. Matter, the Loose Wires front man and founding father of the North’s super crew Northern Hostility is joined up front by Defenders of Style member, local legend Prys – their debut EP, ‘Literary Vices’, a seven track EP that blends concise and insightful word play with heavyweight beats and relentless flows. Verbal Contact will in the mean time, be playing around the UK, staying raw and bringing you the unapologetic, unconditionally, unrefined UK hip hop.
