Jay Dee was the real deal, so often after artists have died people feel the need to lay claim to the fact that someone was a legend. People say that 2-Pac, Biggie et al. were the greatest when in true comparison to a real GREAT, J Dilla, they fall into nothing more than mediocrity at best.
Dilla was several years ahead of his time, and it took his passing in early 2006 to bring to the world’s attention the amazing work he’d carried out, producing and working with some of the most talented people in hip hop. From Common , ATCQ, The Roots, D’Angelo and so many, many more, a producer I had taken an interest in and followed when he created the Pharcyde’s Runnin’.
He was a modest man, he shy-ed away from the media and press exposure and enjoyed letting the acts take the credit, instead he preferred spending time digging for the next sample, reinventing the sounds. Many people will wish for a career only half as good as his and what he achieved in such a short life is amazing; what he created and could have created really makes you wonder if anyone else can match/exceed his brilliance.
