Madlib – “WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip” Music Review

Everyone’s heard of this haven’t they… the last of the BBE: Beat Generation series featuring the most independently free spirited producer of our generation? Madlib has taken a step away from his recent ventures into world music deconstruction and more towards his more formal grounding in hip hop, funk and soul. Many of the tracks are solely produced by Madlib and on two of the tracks he gives us a few verses, especially Heat with some great xylophones and hi-hat.

Stand out tracks on the album are Drinks Up feat J. Dilla amigos Frank N Dank who drop some quality funny verses, Yo Yo Affair Pt. 1 & 2 ft. Frezna has quintessential lyrics and the soul sample induced Life ft. Karriem Rigins. This CD/2LP offers a true lesson in quality production with distorted drums, crazy loops, soulful samples and emotionally fueled beats.

This is a solid album and there’s a few future classics on here, previous outings of the Beat Generation series featured J Dilla, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Pete Rock, Madlib fits well within this series and rounds off a project that started with his late label mate and legend Dilla.
