How Music Inspires Fashion Designers

As elements of culture, music and fashion are synonymous with one another – throughout history the two have evolved together, and each inspires the other. Particular musical artists or bands may be catalysts for particular fashions – who could forget the iconic images of the Elvis`s suits or Madonna in her not so high-street bra?

Where once we might have dressed like our favourite pop stars or bands in the vague hope that this might actually make us feel like them, there now tends to be more of an appreciation of the statements and social interpretations that musicians make – we aren`t buying the musicians, we`re opting into a culture that they also represent – which could be just one of the many reasons why consumers buy music-orientated fashion.

For anyone who has ever been to a music festival or watched a live concert of their favourite band, then no doubt you will have also at some point walked past a merchandise stall that sells t-shirts and hoodies with the band`s name or image on it. Merchandise can be a great way for musicians to make some extra cash, but it can also make good free advertising; and smaller, unrecognised, up-and-coming artists are just as likely to welcome this type of publicity, just as people are happy to wear it if it means that people will recognise that they associate themselves with that particular band or style of music.

Music T.Shirts in particular are perhaps more popular now than ever before, partly because the music scene as a whole is vast and so investing our time and money into a particular band acknowledges our general tastes – like a team kit we are wearing something we believe in and represent. Where musical tastes differ, fashion will always work alongside those tastes so there are different `styles` of clothing for the punk, rock, hip-hop etc worlds.

Atticus is a good example of a fashion label that is synonymous with music and the `culture` that they both represent. There are several bands and artists under the Atticus wing; effectively the brand acts like a sponsor in that the musicians wear the Atticus lines because the styles of clothing matches their own `image`, and audiences will also buy into that image where they also share the same sense of music/fashion style. In some cases, as with the artist Brian Ewing, there is even a direct link in the design of clothing and musical image.
