Stateless Feat. Gary Castleton “Window 23 EP” Review

To mark the launch of First Word Excursions the sister arm to local label First Word Records, Stateless team up with Gary Castleton (Sage Francis) who delivers a half-rap style that perfectly compliments both sides of this EP. Leeds based, Stateless are one of the UK´s most exciting bands, currently on course to explode all over the music world. The band fuses a conventional band set-up of vocals, bass and drums with the electronic mesh of turntables, from New Bohemia’s kidkanevil, and live programming. Comparisons to Radiohead & Portishead abound Window 23 with cinematic strings and booming drums and the excellent talents of Castleton bring together a wonderful piece of music.

Stateless released their self-titled debut album with !K7 last year to massive critical acclaim and are currently busy recording for album No.2 which is set to be bigger, badder and bolder than ever before. Receiving plaudits from DJ Shadow, Chris James (vocals) was invited to appear on Shadow’s album the Outsider. Both live and in the studio, Stateless are an unorthodox hybrid of rock, turntables and electro wizardry.

Listen online on their myspace and for the princely sum of £1.50 you can download the EP from First Word Records in wonderful 320kbps and a free mp3 from Stateless “Wade In” is thrown in for the hell of it!?!
