Witchdoctor Wise - Trapped in the Asylum (Review)
Published by Chris August 3rd, 2007 in Music Reviews.I was sent a copy of Brighton based emcee Witchdoctor Wise’s debut album “Trapped in the Asylum”. Your probably wondering why that name sounds familiar well its possibly from his work with Lost Souls. This LP is a classic in the making with Witchdoctor Wise’s comfortable, almost conversational flow. The lyrics cover everyday topics of drugs, girls and a young man’s struggles. The main theme of the album comes across as a narrative of a young English man’s life, probably best summed up in the hook of the title track, “young, broke and English”.
What I found realy enjoyable about the album are the different styles each producer has brought to the table with some really grimy beats to more laid back easy listeners that all show off the vocal abilities of the emcee as he switches it with some multis in “Its Gone Dark”.
The second half of the album is alot darker and grittier, and Witchdoctor Wise really brings some passion to his flow compared to the earlier half of this LP. This has to be the best album that I’ve stumbled upon this year, and with the work that the emcee has been putting in on the UK scene this album could be a real door opener.
