The Cinematic Orchestra is a British-based jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. In both live and studio context, the Cinematic Orchestra employ a live band which improvises along with a turntabilist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a finished product that is seamless combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.
In the last three years the Cinematic Orchestra has played far and wide at every conceivable type of venue and on all kinds of occasion. They have shocked out from the Jazz Café to the Jazz Bop via Ronnie Scott’s. And in somewhat hardcore fashion they toured the North American Jazz Festival circuit in the back of a transit van, with the dates culminating in a prestigious support slot for John McLaughlin in Central Park.
They have toured in Germany, Japan, Italy and Portugal. They have also clocked up the music festival mileage appearing at, amongst others, Homelands and Essential (UK), Sonar (Spain), Celerico De Basto (Portugal), North Sea Jazz and Drum Rhythm (Holland), Cannes (France), Fuji Rock (Japan) and Montreux (Switzerland) and have headlined The Big Chill twice. Their appearance on the Radio One Live week in Birmingham in 2001 with Roots Manuva and Ricky Rankin, was also a memorable affair and they were invited back to play at last year’s event in Nottingham.
Other live highlights include playing at the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Stanley Kubrick by the Directors Guild. Also the ‘Every Day’ album launch when the Hanover Grand was dressed and draped with red velvet curtains and Chinese lanterns and new TCO singer Niara Scarlett battled it out with Fontella Bass. And most recently, they sold out the Shepherds Bush Empire and had all three balconies jumping.
Kid Kanevil is providing support with a full live show. The beat making mastermind behind sold out debut single ‘Kranium Rock’ and the sizzling follow up ‘F.I.R.E.’, Kid Kanevil’s snare-snapping hip hop breaks are a core element of the sound of Leeds label First Word Records. He is also a member of the highly rated band Stateless, whose fans include none other than DJ Shadow! Whilst influenced by US producers such as J Dilla and Questlove, Kid K’s style remains unique with its bass heavy complex rhythms and soulful sample-work. Earlier this year he was awarded a prestigious bursary from the BBC to support his music, also picking up ‘electronic artist of the year’ at the Leeds Independent Music Awards.
