On the back of one of the UK’s best selling Hip Hop albums and the strength and success of the 3 award winning Ruben Fleisher’s videos, DJ Format has built up a large following for his music and live gigs. Format’s records are a celebration of the music he loves and that passion is shared with a growing audience – old jazz and funk, long-forgotten samples; first release Music for The Mature BBoy showcasing his production skills as well as providing a platform for the obscurities he has dug out of crates along the way.
Following the fairly unexpected success of the LP, Format was sent back to the studio for his follow up, If You Can’t Join ‘Em…Beat ‘Em’ Roping in Abdominal, Jurassic 5’s Charly 2na & Akil once more as well as new Canadian addition D-Sisive, this LP saw Format continue doing what he does best, producing funky, break-full hip hop with a cut & paste touch you can’t resist.
Task Force are an underground British hip hop group from Highbury in London, England. The group is led primarily by two brothers Chester P (vocals, song writing and occasional music production) and Farma G (vocals, song writing and music production). Their music has generally been acclaimed for its uncompromising portrayals of the harsh realities of inner-city London. Their output has at times also been somewhat unconventional in that it has encompassed an honesty and ecological sobriety that is not frequently compatible with the materialism associated with modern hip hop culture. Task Force earned widespread recognition for its debut album New Mic Order which was produced by rapper Blade’s former collaborator British producer Mark B and features a guest appearance from fellow Mud Family member Skinnyman and turntablism from Mr. Thing of the Scratch Perverts. Task Force has since released a back catalogue of considerable length, consisting for the most part of vinyl-only EPs and singles. A pivotal change in music style came when Task Force branched off to create their own independent label; Music From The Corner in 2001, marked by the release of Music From The Corner Volume 1. A darker more intense series of predominantly self-produced albums followed. Task Force is currently working on Music From The Corner Volume 5 and there is speculation of solo projects from Chester P and Farma G.
Manchester’s finest Hip Hop crew Broke’n’English released their long awaited debut album ‘Subject2Status’ on Fat City Recordings. Fresh from supplying Hip Hop Connection with their January cover mount CD and winning Best mixtape at BBC 1xtra’s 2006 mixtape awards the much anticipated full length is making waves featuring the singles ‘Tryin’ and ‘Squeeze’ as well as future faves such as ‘This Is Our Life’ and ‘Jingle Jangle’.
Also on the bill we have MC Trip (part of the Spit Kingdom Soundsystem and regular cohort of Killa Kela) joined by Beni G from the Mixologists and Jungle Drummer. And not forgetting New Bohemia residents GKut and Noah and your host Testament of course…
See you down the front.
