It’s been a long time since I’ve anticipated an album and the release date of May 28th seemed too far away and I just checked kidkanevil’s myspace everyday listening mainly to the track ‘Good Morning Whats New’ featuring soul vocalist ‘Andreya Triana’. Then I opened up the i-tunes music store and search for ‘Andreya Triana’ and sitting there was the long awaited album ‘Problems & Solutions’ a month before release date. I downloaded it straight away and listened.I was hit with 16 tracks stretching from club made love stories (5th Gear) politically-themed rap tracks (Click Click POP) hypnotic & soulful beats (Help Me Out Y’all, The Hours, Its Me) and scientific ponderings over lovely drum patterns (Rainstorm Pts 1, 2 & 3).
The album surprised me in many ways one example being that the two tracks I was really waiting to hear the most were some of my least favourites these where ‘Click Click POP’ which featured Leeds hip-hop duo Double D Dagger and ‘Def Certificate’ featuring UK hip-hop heavyweights Jehst & Sir Smurf Lil’. This wasn’t because the tracks were in anyway bad, its just that the music stretches such a wider palette than just hip-hop when boxing it in with standard hip-hop tracks seemed like their wasn’t the spark of creativity that was shown on the other tracks.Another way it surprised me was that every track sounds so organic, there isn’t a synthesized bass loop in sight and many tracks pull out some strange instruments, like the two tracks featuring Yarah Bravo, a female hip-hop artist best known for her work with DJ Vadim, work with the main part of the beat being an infectious flute and if my ears don’t deceive me I’m sure there is a xylophone on ‘The Profound Truth’.
Overall kidkanevil has made one hell of a debut and I’m sure from this we’ll hear a lot more of him in years to come.
