DJ Format & Dirty Diggers – The Faversham 3rd Birthday – Sunday 6th May 2007

For their third birthday celebrations new bohemia brought in one of their strongest line-ups to date, and the packed out crowd were as eager as i was to catch one of the uk’s biggest names: DJ Format, not to mention the support acts: Dirty Diggers and Rup.

When I arrived, admittedly quie late on, there was a couple of rappers up on stage, I don’t know who they were but they were impressive and put in an energetic performance; if anyone who knows who they are then let us know because I’d certainly keep an eye out for them.

The next act, a solo emcee who kept the crowd interested and displaying some impressive rhymes, also didn’t announce his name. I soon figured it was South London’s Rup, a witty rapper keeping his topics accessible (as well as covering many a rappers’ favourite subject: excessive drinking), surprising much of the crowd with his talent and had beats to keep heads nodding: his anthem “King Cnut” proving a particular highlight. Check his ‘Rup on Zebra EP’ on Zebra Traffic for some of fine tuneage (not to mention a phenomenal guestspot from Dr Syntax). And yes, the ‘n’ and ‘u’ are meant to be that way round.

rup’s cnut’ish music^^

Playing something of a home gig – one half of the Diggers is West Yorkshire-bred – the Dirty Diggers came on stage in good cheer to an enthusiastic audience. They tore through a few tracks, working the crowd before cracking out their current single Wannabes: a bouncy track attacking the futility of ficcle band-wagon hopping artists, rapping “your stuck in rut copying whats hot… the wannabes wanna be something their not, copying the lot off something that’s hot, but by the time they changed their taste its gone from wack to weak to waste…”,
The Diggers had a stage presence that created buzz about their set, holding the attention of all corners of the audience. They were joined onstage by Rup for ‘City to the Sticks’, a sentimental look at life in their respective homelands, providing a high point of an excellent set, however it was their grinding bass driven closing track that stole the show

The night’s headliner, Brighton based producer DJ Format, came to the stage, taking us through a couple of his own tracks before entering a funk-orientated set that picked up the pace of the night sharply. I’m a big fan of the mature b-boy and expected a set to match the sound of his old-skool infused albums, and have to admit I was slightly disappointed with his tune selection and lack of an emcee, as there was little to tell it apart from a Thursday night at HiFi except seven quid extra entry, however this is a minor gripe as Format entertained the Faversham immensely with a generally smooth and well executed set, keeping the thinning crowd swinging and dancing, bouncing about ’til their barnacles blistered and legs gave out, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.

Overall, the night was a great success, a superb line-up ensuring New Bo saw in their fourth year as they hopefully mean to go on.
