Leeds By Example Feature

The ‘Leeds By Example’ project has enabled a variety of local artists to come together and release their music on one album; showcasing the wealth of talent in the city. The album was released in April 2006 to huge acclaim from both the local and national music press. It has already had radio play on numerous stations including BBC Radio 1xtra and Radio Leeds.

The project has also been supported by other local businesses, from clothing stores to recording studios. The album is available across the city and stocked by all the major and independent retailers. Both HMV and Virgin have been involved in the promotion, clearly recognising the potential of the project.

There has also been a growing interest across the water, with a number of units been shipped to the United States and Canada. Well know Leeds artists such as Breaking the Illusion and Junkyard tactics feature along with some younger up and coming groups from the Nine Lives Clique and Rough Records.

Jamie Donoughue, from the project says:

“There is a realisation that UK hip hop, is in its infancy and that Leeds has a huge part to play in shaping both the underground scene and the mainstream charts….

What the project aims to do is bring these artists together in a bid to highlight the wealth of talent

Leeds has been overlooked for many years as a city for music when, in fact, we have one of the strongest music scenes around.”

The album is the first of a number of projects planned for Leeds By Example and a follow up album seems to be in the pipeline. For more information on Leeds By Example contact info@leedsbyexample.com or www.leedsbyexample.com
